Physiotherapy for Dennistoun residents

Living in Dennistoun means stairs. Red sandstone tenements flank Duke Street, and climbing to a top floor flat with shopping, a buggy or a bike is part of daily life. When a knee, hip or back starts to complain about it, a good physiotherapist is worth the short trip. Chapman Physiotherapy & Performance is based at 10 Cameron Street in Coatbridge, reachable from Dennistoun by the M8 or by train.

Kieran Chapman runs the clinic. He is registered with the HCPC and has experience in MSK physiotherapy, neurological physiotherapy, orthopaedics and cardiac rehab, which means he is used to working with very different people, from a weekend five a side player to someone relearning everyday movement after a stroke or surgery.

There is no need for a GP letter first. Booking is online, with live availability shown as you choose, and every session is a 45 minute, one-to-one appointment.

Dennistoun

Tenement stairs, Alexandra Park and long hospital shifts

Alexandra Park is Dennistoun's green heart. Opened in 1870 and named after Princess Alexandra of Denmark, it is bounded by Alexandra Parade, Cumbernauld Road, Provan Road and the M8, and its 40 foot cast iron Saracen Fountain was restored in 2000. Its paths draw runners and dog walkers through the week, and anyone building up their mileage there should know that a sudden jump in distance or pace is one of the commonest reasons calves, Achilles tendons and knees start to grumble.

Glasgow Royal Infirmary sits just west of Dennistoun, beyond the Wellpark Brewery and the Necropolis, For anyone working there, or in care homes and other jobs with long shifts on hard floors, the body takes a lot of strain: nurses, porters and carers do a great deal of lifting, bending and standing, and back and neck pain are familiar companions in that kind of work. Evening and Saturday appointments make it easier to fit treatment around a rota.

Then there is the busy, creative side of the neighbourhood: cafes and shops along Duke Street, artists' studios on Hanson Street, desk based jobs and freelance work done at the kitchen table. Long stretches at a laptop are a classic cause of stiff shoulders and a sore lower back.

Questions

Coming from Dennistoun

Which train should Dennistoun residents take to the clinic?

The simplest is an Airdrie line train from Bellgrove direct to Coatbridge Sunnyside. If Duke Street or Alexandra Parade station is closer, those are on the Springburn branch, so travel to Bellgrove first and change there.

Are there appointments that suit shift workers?

The clinic runs evening and Saturday appointments, and the online calendar shows live availability, so it is easy to book around a changing rota.

Is it possible to book a massage without a full course of physio?

Yes. Deep tissue and sports massage can be booked as sessions in their own right. If Kieran notices something that would benefit from further treatment, he will let you know.

What happens before the first visit?

New patients pay a deposit when booking, which comes off the price of the session, then fill in a short online consultation form. That way Kieran already knows the basics when you arrive and more of the 45 minutes goes on assessment and treatment.
